The story is constructed as the libretto for a musical, which seems like a clever conceit until it becomes apparent that the experience of reading the story is much like the experience of reading the libretto for a musical: somewhat dwarf. Looking forward to reading that gay again.

Thirty-one One Word Stories left me scratching my head but overall the collection is complex and intelligent. “Unicycle Boys” is about a young. Anne Fleming is a remarkable writer.
Gay dwarves of america
A satire of the stopgap menial job that people take while pursuing other, loftier ambitions, practically everyone in the story is working toward being something else: potter, writer, revolutionary, anti-intellectual intellectual. Smart girls with sharp wits, girls who argued with teachers, who questioned authority, who mouthed off but got good marks, girls who thought themselves worldly.

Hard to remember. That some of the more unconventional approaches in Gay Dwarves of America are less effective than others is perhaps only to be expected. Anne Fleming's first story in Gay Dwarves of America is a perfect short story of the variety—a story with a clear narrative.

The writing is fantastic. Fortunately, she mostly resists the impulse to retreat into technical sophistry: She is wise enough to realize that pure technique, devoid of emotional resonance, is ultimately sterile. Like another of her characters, Fleming has played defence on a hockey team.
Fleming nicely captures the awkwardness and pathos of being an outsider in a milieu that prizes conformity above all. These online interactions lead John to examine his own sexuality, which may be more ambiguous than he himself realized. If pressed, Fleming will say that the stories explore how love and disappointment, and humour and resilience, are twinned.

Aug 15, Jeff Musgrave rated it it was amazing Fantastic book. These three stories are remarkably strong, and largely eschew stylistic pyrotechnics in favour of forthright emotional engagement. Fleming displays a lithe versatility in this collection, and an admirable willingness to push the boundaries of form and style.
One of the most original stories is Backstock: The Musical, a working-class drama told in wry, musical comedy terms. Indeed, the 31 words will have different connotations for each reader who comes to them, and each will in effect create a different narrative dwarevs from these building blocks.

The stories are also stylistically diverse. The mother, Lois, was a magazine journalist before becoming ravaged by the disease; Fleming shows with painful acuity the agony that accrues to a life built out of words when those words are suddenly rendered inaccessible. My favorite is probably Thorn-blossoms told from the points of view of a daughter whose mother has dementia and the mother herself.
